CLI Reference

ak render

Validate and compile AK Render Page Specs, or serve the compiler over MCP, with the exact compiler version your ak release pins.

Use ak render to run the AK Render compiler (@bestagentkits/render) at the exact version your ak release pins. The kit skills released alongside it (--ak-render in preview, plan, explain and brainstorm) name the same version, so a spec you validate by hand compiles the way the skill compiles it. ak render --help prints the version it runs. If an installed skill names a different version, run that skill's npx command instead.

ak render is a thin wrapper: it runs npx -y @bestagentkits/render@0.3.0 with your arguments. It does not bundle Node.js or reimplement the compiler.

Requirements

  • Node.js 20.11 or newer, with npx on PATH.
  • Network access to the npm registry on the first run; later runs use the npm cache.

If ak render --help reports an unknown command, your ak predates the wrapper. Run the pinned package directly instead: npx -y @bestagentkits/render@0.3.0 validate page.page.yaml --json.

Usage

ak render validate <spec.yaml|spec.json|-> [flags]
ak render build <spec.yaml|spec.json|-> [--out page.html] [flags]
ak render mcp
SubcommandRunsEffect
validateak-render validateChecks a Page Spec without rendering it. Read-only.
buildak-render compileCompiles a Page Spec to one self-contained, offline HTML file. Writes --out, or stdout without it.
mcpak-render mcpServes catalog, search-catalog, describe, recipes, recipe, validate, render and themes as MCP tools over stdio until the client closes stdin.

Pass - as the spec path to read the spec from stdin.

Flags

Every argument after the subcommand goes to the compiler unchanged, so the compiler's own flags apply: --json, and for build also --out <file> and --theme <preset>. Run npx -y @bestagentkits/render@0.3.0 --help for the full compiler flag list.

ak consumes its own --yes, --no-interactive, --quiet and --verbose flags and does not forward them. --json is forwarded, because the compiler writes the JSON output. Arguments after a -- separator are forwarded verbatim. ak render never starts a background auto-update.

Examples

# Validate and print machine-readable diagnostics.
ak render validate plans/report/report.page.yaml --json

# Compile beside the spec with a theme preset.
ak render build plans/report/report.page.yaml --out plans/report/report.html --theme editorial

# Register the compiler as an MCP server in an MCP client.
ak mcp add ak-render --command ak --arg render --arg mcp

Run from the project root when the project keeps theme presets in .ak-render/themes/; the compiler discovers presets under the working directory.

Output and exit codes

Output, --json documents and exit status are the compiler's own.

CodeMeaning
0The spec is valid, the page compiled, or the MCP server exited cleanly.
1With diagnostics, the spec has validation errors: fix each diagnostic at its $.path, then validate again. Without diagnostics (empty stdout under --json), npx or npm failed (registry, network or cache); read stderr and leave the spec alone.
2Usage or input/output error, such as an unreadable spec or a missing spec path.
127npx was not found; install Node.js 20.11 or newer. On Windows, also returned when npx is a batch shim without node.exe and npm's npx-cli.js beside it: ak does not pass arguments through cmd.exe, so run npx directly.

When ak itself fails (a missing spec path or a missing npx) and you passed --json, it prints the standard ak JSON error envelope to stderr.

  • ak mcp registers MCP servers with your coding agents.
  • The preview skill describes the opt-in AK Render HTML route.
